Last Friday (29th June) saw St Catherine’s avoid the rain clouds to host their annual summer fair.
High Sheriff Nick Hayward officially opened the fair by smashing the first plate at the plate smashing stand. The fun then continued with a brilliant dog display by Canine Partners, who demonstrated how their dogs are trained to assist those with disabilities.
This was followed by a falconry display by Appuldurcombe’s Isle of Wight Owl and Falconry Centre.
Lots on offer
Stalls were run by staff, students and members of the community and included jewellery, cakes, smoothies, sale of ‘The Voice’ magazine (produced by the learners), books, a human fruit machine, tug of war and much more.
The fair closed with an auction with prizes including two tickets to Bestival, kindly donated by St Catherine’s patron Rob da Bank; a rugby shirt worn and donated by Wasps player Andy Gomarsall; a family activity pack to a range of Island attractions and a decoupage cabinet made by learners at the Worx, St Catherine’s vocational unit on Ventnor Industrial Estate.
A great success
Principal Brendan Carleton said “This year we have had another fantastic Summer Fair. There was a great variety of activities for all to enjoy and it was wonderful to see everyone pulling together to make the fair such a success.”
The day raised over £2000 for St Catherine’s, which will go towards supporting the School, Further Education Centre, and vocational unit The Worx.
