St Helens Historical Society launch new book

Thanks to Sally for sharing details of this new book. Ed

St Helens Historical Society are pleased to be launching the sale of a new book entitled ‘Goose Island Gleanings’ from Mrs Widgery by the late Eileen Bradley An original book called Mrs Widgery by Eileen was published in the 1970’s and is often sought after to this day.

Goose Island GleamingsThe new book of Eileen’s work has been compiled by her sister Dorothy Morris from stories used only in a newspaper column many years ago and permission has been given to us to go ahead with the publication of the new book.

Sisters’ memories
The stories all relate to memories of the two young sisters lives, growing up in the late twenties and early thirties in St Helens and many a Goose Islander will be able to relate to them, it is also a great example of ‘a way of life in days gone by’, which will interest everyone interested in the way we used to live in our close knit village.

Eileen’s sister Dorothy Morris will be here to sign any books sold on the day.

Slide show
We are combining the book launch with one of our bi-annual Saturday afternoon slide shows, of pictures of ‘Old St. Helens’. We have been doing this for the last three years as the older population of our members and friends are not always able to get out and about to attend our monthly evening shows.

Our venue will be St Helens Community Centre, Guildford Road, St Helens, and will begin at 2.30pm on Saturday 22nd March. Teas will be available and we will be holding a raffle.

Entry will be by your kind donation. We are a ‘Not for profit organisation’ and any surplus from the sale of the books will be used to help us to continue to keep the Society running.

Aims of the society
The stated aims and objectives of the Society are ‘to promote an appreciation within the community of St. Helens of its heritage by providing an opportunity to examine, preserve and record aspects of its history past and present.’

New members are always welcomed.
