The George Hotel in Yarmouth receives Food and Hygiene rating of Five

After years of being stuck in the very low food and hygiene ratings, The George Hotel in Yarmouth has successfully achieved a rating of Five.

Understanding the ratings
  • 5 is top of the scale – the hygiene standards are very good and fully comply with the law
  • 0 is at the bottom of the scale – urgent improvement is necessary

Problems go back to 2015
Issues with food and hygiene ratings began for The George back in 2015, when the hotel was owned by former Group Chief Executive of Camelot (who ran the National Lottery from 1994 to 2022), Dianne Thompson CBE.

The hotel last achieved a rating of 4 out of 5 in February 2016, but it was several months after Michelin-starred chef, Robert Thompson left The George in 2015, that it was slapped with a 0 rating.

Moved up to rating of 1
The venue remained in that position after an inspection in July 2017, before moving up to a food hygiene rating of 1 in February 2018.

In October 2021, an inspection by environmental health inspectors resulted in the high-end establishment remaining with a food and hygiene rating of 1.

Highest rating
Now under the new ownership of London nightclub impresario, Howard Spooner (whose club creations include The Leopard Lounge, Crazy Larry’s, Embargo, Public and The Clapham Grand), we suspect there has been a great deal of celebration at the news of the rating of 5.

Well done to all who worked hard to achieve this.
