Vectis Astronomical Society explores telescope evolution at latest event

Last updated:

Vectis Astronomical Society will be hosting a public talk on the history of the telescope on Friday 27th March, with the event open both in person and online.

From Galileo to the present day
Richard Flux, the society’s Curator of Instruments, will trace the technological developments that shaped astronomy from the invention of the refracting telescope through to the present day.

The talk will take in centuries of innovation and design improvement, exploring how engineers and scientists built on the work of Galileo and his contemporaries to transform both the science and art of astronomical observation.

Hybrid format for in-person and online audiences
The event takes place at 7.30pm on Friday 27th March at Newchurch Pavilion, which sits adjacent to the Isle of Wight Observatory site near Newchurch, PO36 0LX.

Vectis Astronomical Society runs the event in a hybrid format, meaning those unable to attend in person can watch the presentation live via Zoom.

Tickets for both the in-person and online attendance are available through Eventbrite.

For non-members, a donation of £3 is suggested for either in-person or online access.

The society hosts public events most months of the year.
