Gorgeous Penelope Cruz plays the prickly but resourceful woman at the centre of this exquisitely written and acted film, which mixes comedy, drama and even a touch of Hitchcockian thriller. Almodavar’s obsession with color and surface continues to deepen into a big, bold, almost painterly style.
