Wilson's Phalarope Yarmouth

Rare sighting of Wilson’s Phalarope in Yarmouth

Here’s a fantastic story for bird and wildlife lovers to get excited about.

OnTheWight understands that a bird not normally seen in the UK has been spotted on the Isle of Wight.

Spotted by local resident
A female Wilson’s Phalarope has been photographed and filmed in Yarmouth this month. Local resident, Terry Henderson, was the first to spot the bird.

We understand that since word of the bird’s appearance spread on the Twitcher’s grapevine, the number of mainland visitors to the town, has increased, bringing a welcome boost to tourism.

“What a stunner!”
Videos have been captured of the female – thought to be the only specimen in the UK – near the old station in Yarmouth.

Derek Hale (aka ‘Wight2000’ on YouTube) said,

This female in summer plumage is as good as it gets, what a stunner! Reported at 19.15 on June 18th 2013, still there on 19th when I recorded this video. Note the way it feeds, picking small insects off the water and spinning around in a very busy way. It stayed near a group of Redshank, they are the first to raise the alarm in case of danger, so a good place to be.

Ashley Howe also kindly shared a video he captured of the bird via YouTube.
