St Helens Fort Walk: Important things you should know (Update 4)

Each year there is growing excitement about the prospect of the annual unofficial Bembridge and St Helens Fort Walk.

For over half a century, the Fort Walk has attracted people onto the beaches of St Helens and Bembridge, who – at their own risk and considering the weather conditions – take advantage of the low tide to walk the three quarters of a mile out to St Helens Fort.

If you haven’t done it before, or if you have and have found yourself stuck in traffic on The Duver, we’ve gathered some helpful info for you.

Index of the main points:

Watch the weather
Since OnTheWight shared news of the anticipated 2016 date with readers yesterday, the Met Office have issued a severe weather warning for the day before.

Met Office weather forecast for Bembridge

The weather warning currently finishes on Saturday at 9pm and the forecast for Sunday at 7pm (the anticipated date and time) shows wind gusts of around 28mph. Of course this could change, so make sure you keep an eye on the weather and don’t take any chances.

RNLI-issued short safety video
Alan Doe from Bembridge RNLI has shared a great, short safety tips video with OnTheWight. It only runs for two and a half minutes, but is so packed with top tips, we’ve listed them out in an article dedicated to Fort Walk safety.

Avoid driving down The Duver
Nearly two thousand people are thought to have attended in 2014.

With people, often comes traffic chaos – St Helens was particularly affected by this in 2015 with, according to Ward councillor (and Leader of the Isle of Wight council), Jonathan Bacon, saying that vehicles were blocked on Duver Road for nearly two hours.

Update 18 Aug: It was announced today that there will be no parking allowed on Duver Road any time on Sunday between 6am and Midnight.

Cars:

Cllr Bacon told OnTheWight,

“We had a massive problem with traffic in St Helens last year.

“Duver Road, which is the only vehicular access to St Helens Beach, was completely blocked and, aside from all the problems this created in itself, there would have been no possibility of an emergency vehicle getting to the seafront if required.

“Some people were blocked in for nearly two hours.”

Parking in St Helens is very limited
OnTheWight asked for advice on where might be more appropriate for people to park, Cllr Bacon responded:

“There is no advice that can really be given about parking. St Helens has a parking issue generally so the influx of vehicles last year caused major issues. The Green ended up being used as a car park but it is common land and parking on it is a breach of local bye laws.

“Technically IWC could prosecute anyone parking on the Green. The Green is not insured as a Car Park and no one is willing to take on the responsibility for its use as such due to the risks involved (and the cost it would require to meet those risks).

“There are of course also concerns about the risk of damage to the Green – particularly if we have wet weather in advance, which it seems may be a possibility.”

Take the bus
Alternatively, as Rio Bellgore-Gullit suggested on Facebook, you could take the bus.

They said,

“The number 8 stops at Bembridge Point, by the Tollgate Cafe. This is why I go from Bembridge instead of St Helens. If more people used the bus, it may help the parking/traffic jam issues.”

See the Southern Vectis Website for timetable details (don’t forget to select Sundays when reading the timetable).

Dress for the occasion
Make sure you dress appropriately. Wear something on your feet that you don’t mind getting wet, surfing shoes or jellies.

Be aware that when the tide turns, it can come in fairly quickly, so you may have to wade through water as high as your waist.

Have something to dry yourself with and change into afterwards.

Leave no trace
Many stay on the beaches after completing the walk and celebrate with a BBQ.

If you do hang around, please remember to take your litter with you and do not leave disposable BBQs on the beach. They are dangerous to wildlife and humans.

Thank you Sally for the correct title to this piece. I was on the verge of asking if Bembridge sports and carnival was still held on August bank holiday Monday (In St.Helens). As you correctly say nobody holds any responsibility for this event and all participants do so at their own risk.

If it is any help you can park on the village greens and walk to the duver.

Actually there isn’t parking on the greens – unless someone wants to hire them, as all the events that are held on the green have to do. It does seem that a few people are promoting this event but without wanting to deal with traffic, parking and every other responsibility that comes with advertising the event actually happening. Hiding behind the “at your own risk banner” doesn’t… Read more »

Also I think you’ll find it’s St Helens Sports and Carnival held in St Helens on August Bank Holiday Monday, not connected with Bembridge at all??

How low can a person be to copy my user name! If you wish to make a point get your facts correct and use your own user name. St.Helens greens are common land. Would you sooner the traffic jam as Sally has already pointed out or people use the greens. You obviously have a very low I.Q.

I agree with the original Gooser,, as walk the St Helens fort has become more popular over the years parking has become a premium, and without any organisation or problems people have parked on the green opposite the medical centre!! Without problems or confusion? and do so at there own risk!!! I am a villager and welcome all to this annual event?

Fake gooser, would you like to make yourself known and explain your points of view. Or just hide behind a user name ?

Oh the irony of someone hiding behind a username demanding that someone else hiding behind a username make themselves known.

It’s illegal to park on common land without the owners permission, in this case the IOW council I believe.

Duck (ers) First of all people can park on this land. So check the facts. Secondly if someone wants to copy my user name then perhaps that shows they are hiding behind a screen.

For clarity, it is a breach of the bye laws, which date back to 1907, to park a vehicle on St Helens Green. The problem we have had for many years is the ability to enforce the bye laws. The ability to do so currently rests with the Isle of Wight Council.

Jonathan, people park on the greens while attending football, cricket, car boot sales. The funfair uses the greens. Many local events use the greens, even people attending the medical centre. I am sure as long as it is dry and people use common sense then for a once a year event why not let people use the green. Maybe even go to the extent of charging a… Read more »

You’ve gone from claiming people can park on the green, even telling someone to check the facts when they told you that you were wrong, all the way to asking Cllr Bacon to make an exception to the bye laws when you realised that you were incorrect.

As Cllr Bacon has clearly said, the cost of using the green as parking is prohibitive.

Words, I stick by my comment. people park on St.Helens green all year round. Cllr Bacon also makes it clear that parking on the green has never been sorted as it is down to the council. If it were prohibited then legally there would have to be signs indicating this. There is not, so I revert back to my original statement that people can park on the… Read more »

Another part of the parking picture? “Allowing vehicles on common land It’s an offence to drive a vehicle onto common land unless: .the driver intends to park it within 15 yards of a public road .the driver has permission from the landowner In some circumstances, people who have to drive across a common to access their property may have a right to do so.” And another Island… Read more »

This is a good event. Traffic though needs to be dealt with my suggestion would be to close duver road on the day of the walk so it can give free access to emergency vehicles to the beach if needed.

I am concerned about the official unofficial date on Sunday this year as the winds are relatively strong and that will make a large difference to the spray and tide. Long Distance Walkers are considering not going on the Sunday now and if they are wise enough to pull out, I would urge the less well informed to do the same. It worries me seeing parents setting… Read more »

I have answered some questions to others, but to make it clear, you can park on the greens in St.Helens as it is common land. The land is controlled by the IWC. As Jonathan Bacon has already stated, it is a bylaw that says you can’t.In order for it to be official there must be signs indicating this. There are no signs so please walk the fort… Read more »

You cannot park on the green. There is no need for signs to make a bye law official, but in any case I believe there are signs that make it clear that there is no parking on the green. If you listen to Gooser, you leave yourself liable for a parking ticket. Some people will not be told, and when they are told, will not listen. Gooser,… Read more »

If, as we are told NO ONE takes responsibility for this event why has Jonathon Bacon involved himself? Is he taking responsibility by stopping parking? Make up your mind.

Jonathan has already explained under another subject heading about parking restrictions and the need for emergency access. I don’t believe he alone can stop parking this has to in the form of a traffic order.
What are you trying to say yjc? Jonathan is a well grounded guy and a great local councillor.

From a parallel world I fancy I can just hear yjc saying …. “Why on earth did the Leader of the Council not lift a finger this year after the dangerous traffic jam that developed at the Fort Walk last year? And for heaven’s sake, the man lives there and can’t pretend he didn’t know anything about it. A typical example of the Indies and their ‘I’m… Read more »

I’m not going to add to the Fort Walk debate as it would be repetition, just be sensible, take care and think of other people; but these sort of comments puzzle me. I think it is well known that the Conservative candidates for Bembridge, Brading and St Helens next year are Joe Robertson, who stood in 2009 and who is also a prospective Conservative Parliamentary candidate, and… Read more »

Why so coy, Black Dog. (In case time proves you wrong, presumably). If you mean ‘well known’ for having his photo taken locally along with Jon Gilbey, perhaps Richard Priest, but then again, he’s in the Individual Members Group, and not in the Independents. He didn’t cover himself with glory during his convoluted attempt to overthrow those who had been voted onto the Executive. Why would he… Read more »
