Alan Wells’ ‘Cabal’ apology comments broke private discussion agreement, Whitehouse email reveals

Before publishing the article “Cllr Chris Whitehouse ‘hauled’ before IWCA and gives apology for ‘Nasty Cabal’ Tweets” last Friday, we emailed both Alan Wells and Cllr Chris Whitehouse for comment.

We heard back from Cllr Whitehouse the next day and are still waiting to hear from Alan.

Surprise
Cllr Whitehouse’s email contained a surprise.

It claimed that the conversation that Alan was quoted in the CP on was a private, off-the-record chat. More than that, all present at the meeting, Chris claims, had agreed to make no comment to the media.

What Alan Wells did say to the press
The CP didn’t reveal the source of the story, headlined “Conservative censured over ‘nasty cabal’ tweets”, but Alan is quoted in the piece commenting on Cllr Whitehouse and the meeting, “We had a meeting with him. We demanded his presence and he apologised, basically.”

Alan concludes, “He said he should not have done it and realised it was wrong to put that into the public domain and should have dealt with it in a different way.”

We’ve attempted to contact Alan prior to publishing, but at time of publishing, we hadn’t heard back.

The response from Chris Whitehouse

“Naturally, I had a very friendly and constructive discussion with my conservative colleagues.

“It was, however, a private discussion and we all agreed at the end that it was an off the record private chat and we would none of us make any comment to the media, so I am afraid there is nothing I can say.”
