Beware of novelty items that look like toys say Trading Standards

Isle of Wight Council’s trading standards service is advising parents to be mindful when buying Christmas novelty items that look like toys.

Festive objects, such as illuminated items like a miniature house or snowman, are not classed as toys and therefore do not have to pass as strict UK and EU safety laws.

Although they are not necessarily dangerous, these items can have removable parts that children could put in their mouths, increasing the risk of choking.

Julie Woodhouse from the council’s trading standards service, said:

“To spot a potential hazard on one of the novelty items, always look at the label. They should state they are for decoration only and are not a toy, and should be kept out of reach of children.

“If the label does not state this, or you are unsure, we recommend not buying the item. If the label does have the relevant advice and you buy the item, always keep it out of the reach of children.”
