Council Ready For Winter Road Treatment

GritterWith British Summer Time officially over and the winter now beginning, Isle of Wight Council has plenty of salt stocks in reserve for treating the roads during freezing temperatures.

Tonnes of salt
The council has over 1,300 tonnes of salt in storage at a facility in Newport, with the option of shipping in an extra 500 tonnes from the Mainland should it be needed, although last year the council’s stock was sufficient.

The council is also advising drivers some routes have been revised this year.

Take extra car in cold conditions
The local authority will routinely treat the Island’s more important routes. A number of other roads, such as minor routes, will not be treated including some that may have been routinely gritted in the past.

Drivers are advised to always take extra care in cold conditions on the roads, and to ensure their vehicles are clear of ice and snow before setting off on a journey.

Dedicated page on website
The council’s website also features a page dedicated to providing guidelines and safety tips for driving during winter, including how to prepare your car and driving in snow and ice.

To view the page, go to iwight.com and search ‘winter driving’ in the search box.
