Discover sharks, turtles and sea creatures on the Isle of Wight’s shoreline this half-term

Families looking for an outdoor adventure this half-term are being invited to explore one of the Isle of Wight’s most fascinating shorelines, as popular ranger-led rock pooling and fossil hunting sessions return to Fort Victoria.

The guided activities, taking place across the late May half-term week, will give visitors the chance to discover the remarkable wildlife and hidden history of the coastline.

What to expect on the shore
From crabs and anemones to shells and fish, the beach is teeming with marine life — while keen-eyed explorers may even uncover turtle, crocodile, shark or fish fossils.

About the sessions
Led by Fort Victoria ranger Anita Matheson, the sessions are designed to be fun and educational for all ages, offering a hands-on way to learn more about the Island’s natural environment.

Anita said,

“Fort Victoria has an incredible beach for discovery. Every visit reveals something new, whether it is a tiny sea creature in the rock pools or a glimpse into prehistoric life through fossil finds.

“These sessions are a great way for families to get outside, explore together and learn about the Island’s unique coastline.”

Session dates and times
The events will take place on four dates:

  • Monday, 25th May at 11am
  • Wednesday, 27th May at 2pm
  • Thursday, 28th May at 2.30pm
  • Friday, 29th May at 2.30pm

Fort Victoria is situated between Yarmouth and Colwell. Participants are asked to meet outside the Rangers Office prior to the start of each session.

Activities typically last between one hour and 90 minutes, allowing plenty of time to explore the shore and learn from the ranger.

How to take part
There is no need to book in advance, with visitors encouraged to simply turn up on the day, although numbers may be limited to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

The cost is £3 per person or £10 for a family group, with cash payments requested.

Those attending are advised to wear appropriate footwear for the beach and be prepared for uneven, sometimes slippery terrain.
