HTP Apprenticeship College retains ‘Good’ rating following recent Ofsted inspection

HTP Apprenticeship College in Newport has kept its ‘Good’ rating after an Ofsted inspection in July 2025.

Inspectors looked at teaching, support and results for both learners and apprentices.

Learners enjoy their studies
Learners say they enjoy their courses and feel motivated to work hard. They spoke about the “good teaching and excellent support” they receive.

Inspectors found that learners attend regularly, behave well and show respect to each other and staff.

Confidence and skills grow quickly
The Ofsted report states that many learners arrive with gaps in their education or little confidence. Apprentices who once had no qualifications now build skills and become valued employees.

Learners say they like being treated as adults and enjoy taking responsibility for their learning.

Careers support and opportunities
The inspectors added that HTP gives learners useful careers advice and good work experience.

Almost all move on to apprenticeships, further study or jobs once they finish their courses.

Learners told inspectors they “feel safe” and know how to “report any concerns.”

Courses designed for the Island
In addition, Ofsted explained that leaders design courses to meet the needs of the Isle of Wight and nearby areas.

They work with local employers, including the NHS, to create new opportunities. For example, they set up a pre-apprenticeship course with the NHS, which led every learner into an apprenticeship.

They also offer outdoor learning, such as forest craft and kayaking, which helps disaffected learners gain confidence.

High standards from staff
Leaders set high expectations for both staff and learners. Teachers build courses step by step, so knowledge and skills grow in the right order.

In childcare, learners first cover safeguarding and health and safety before moving on to more complex ideas about child development.

Teachers explain things clearly, ask useful questions and give feedback that helps learners improve, said the inspectors.

Room to improve
However, Ofsted said more work is needed to raise apprenticeship achievement rates.

Mathematics also remains a weak spot, with too few learners gaining the qualification.

Supportive environment
Inspectors found a strong culture of respect and equality. Staff receive training in safeguarding and Prevent, so learners understand how to stay safe.

Leaders look after staff wellbeing and make sure new teachers get good support.

Ofsted also confirmed that safeguarding is effective.
