Island Planning Strategy changes approved by Full Council ahead of public consultation

Last updated:

A series of proposed changes to the Island Planning Strategy received approval at a meeting of Full Council on Wednesday night (19th November 2025).

Councillors agreed the revisions, which now move forward to a fresh round of public consultation.

The Island Planning Strategy sets out how land on the Isle of Wight will be used and developed in the years ahead.

It covers key areas including housing, employment, infrastructure and environmental protection, and will guide future planning decisions once adopted.

Responding to earlier concerns
Councillors approved the proposed changes in response to concerns raised by Planning Inspectors earlier this year.

A six-week public consultation will open on Monday 1st December and will run until Monday 12th January 2026.

How to take part
Residents will be able to view consultation material online, as well as at public libraries, County Hall and the Seaclose Offices.

Each proposed change will have its own response form, and supporting material — including a guide and FAQs — will help people understand the process.

For those who want an early look at the proposals, the full report presented to councillors is already available online.

How to take part
Once the consultation opens, residents can submit feedback through an online form or by email or post to Planning Services.

Planning Services will send all feedback to the Planning Inspectors.

The Planning Inspectors will re-open the formal examination of the Island Planning Strategy to consider the proposed changes alongside the public’s views.
