A new community-powered website is giving Isle of Wight residents and visitors the tools to report, track, and help tackle dog fouling across the Island.
Isle of Poop uses an interactive map to let users pinpoint exactly where dog waste has been left on paths, in parks, and along beaches.
How the website works
The process is straightforward: a user spots a problem, takes a photo, and the website logs the GPS location of the report.
A moderation team then reviews each submission before the system automatically forwards it to Island Roads, helping direct clean-up efforts to where they are most needed.
The developers have also built in a gamification element, with users earning points and climbing a leaderboard for each report they contribute.
Built by people who love the Island
The team behind the website say community frustration drove them to create it. They said,
“We built it because we love this island, but dodging dog mess on every walk – along our paths, parks, and beaches – isn’t acceptable.
“Local authorities do great work, but they can’t be everywhere.”
They describe the website as a way of shifting some of that responsibility to the people who use those spaces every day.
Focusing clean-up efforts
The Isle of Poop team said,
“Isle of Poop puts the power in the hands of the people who actually use these spaces every day.
“By mapping where the problem is worst, we can help focus cleanup efforts and encourage responsible dog ownership.”
The Isle of Poop website is available now for Isle of Wight residents and visitors to use.
