The thoughts of all members of the Alliance Group are with the Leader of the Council, Lora Peacey Wilcox, who was taken unwell at the Full Council Meeting on Wednesday evening.

Lora has been working incredibly hard in recent months leading our group and driving change in the Council.

At the beginning of our term she was christened ‘The Pocket Rocket’ and she has more than lived up to that name.

Time to recover and recharge
However even Rockets occasionally need some R&R.

Lora will be reducing her workload for a short period to recover and recharge her batteries so we ask that members of the press and public respect this.

During this time, Lora will still be undertaking some key pre-existing commitments which she feels she cannot miss.

Stand with Midwives Campaign
One of the reasons Lora insisted on attending the meeting on Wednesday was to give her Leader’s address to the Council.

One matter she was keen to highlight was the Stand with Midwives Campaign and the local gathering to support this campaign on Sunday 21st November at Appley Beach in Ryde.

In her address Lora highlighted that there is a crisis in this key part of the NHS, that over 60 per cent of Midwives are thinking of leaving the profession and 29 of every 30 newly qualified midwives are in fact leaving. We have an excellent Maternity Department on the Island and we need to recognise and support and it and particularly the staff who work there. Our difficulties may not be as extreme as those in other areas but one must never be complacent.

Hence Lora encouraged as many people as possible to attend the local event to show their support for this essential part of the medical profession.
