West Acre Park plans artists impression of green space

Isle of Wight greenfield site controversy: Major housing development gets the green light

A controversial major housing development on the Isle of Wight has been approved — once again.

It took the Isle of Wight council’s planning committee more than three and a half hours to determine the future of Ryde’s West Acre Park last night (Tuesday).

The housing development, proposed by Captiva Homes, on the former site of Westridge Farm, will now see 473 homes built on the greenfield site.

Loss of protected curlew habitat
The main issues committee members were debating tonight related to the potential loss of protected curlew habitat.

It was a problem raised by Natural England after the committee had approved the application, in July 2021, but before official planning permission had been granted.

Back to the legal details
It had held the application in limbo since June last year.

Officers can now continue ironing out all the legal details.

More details to follow.
