Isle of Wight Makes Private Eye Rotten Boroughs Again

It’s been a pretty long time since the Isle of Wight Council have graced the ‘Rotten Boroughs’ page of news and current affairs magazine, Private Eye.

Every two weeks when the esteemed organ drops onto our door mat, we turn to the Rotten Boroughs section to see whether Steve Beynon has managed to attract the same attention that Joe ‘Vera’ Duckworth received whilst he was Chief Executive for the Island (all 18 of the months that he was).

As far as Private Eye goes, Steve’s managed to stay below the radar over the last year, but perhaps that is all about to change.

Bully for you
If you turn to page 13 of this week’s issue (Eye 1255), you’ll see that ex-interim assistant director for children and young people, Deborah Cameron, has brought the Isle of Wight to the editor’s attention once again.

We’re sure you all remember the £750 a day, three day a week, six month contract that Deborah negotiated.

Six complaints of bullying in six months alleged
Well it appears that although Deborah has long since left the employ of the IWC, she left a bit of mess behind. The Eye report that no fewer than six formal grievance complaints against her for bullying have been lodged by council staff.

That’s not bad is it? One for each of the months that she worked on the Island.

Somewhat backs up the claims of a culture of bullying and harassment that we so often hear reported from council staff, wouldn’t you say?

We’ll contact the council and find out their view of it and get back to you when we hear.
