Over 100 enthusiastic runners took to the trails this weekend for the annual IW Relay, a unique team running challenge that sees participants cover the full length of the Isle of Wight — and back again — in 12 legs.
Organised by the West Wight Road Runners, the event attracted around 110 runners from local clubs and was open to anyone keen to assemble a team and take part. Detailed maps and leg changeover instructions were provided in advance, allowing runners to focus on the challenge and enjoy the day.

Participating teams included Isle of Wight Road Runners, West Wight Road Runners, Wootton Bridge Runners, Ventnor Sloggers, Dark Star, Vectis Academy, and even a remarkable trio who completed all 12 legs between just the three of them.
The relay began bright and early at 6am from Highdown Car Park in Totland Bay and concluded back at the Highdown Inn, where runners celebrated with well-earned refreshments at the pub’s beer festival.

While the IW Relay is a fun, non-competitive event, there was still excitement at the finish line as the Isle of Wight Road Runners crossed first, completing the 57-mile course in an impressive 7 hours and 40 minutes.

The IW Relay has been going for several years now and is a popular event on the IW running calendar. It gives local runners a chance to test their endurance, build camaraderie, and enjoy the stunning island scenery — all in the spirit of community and fun.
