18 to 30-year-olds invited to join free zine-making and ecology workshop in Sandown

A free two-day workshop is taking place in Sandown this June, offering young people the chance to explore their connections with the Island’s natural environment through creative practice.

Designer and illustrator Tommy Brentnall will lead the sessions, joined by researchers Daneen Cowling and Fiona Middleton.

The event runs on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th June, from 11am to 4pm, at Boojum & Snark, 105 High Street, Sandown.

Zines, maps and field recordings
Those taking part in activities can look forward to collective map-making, field recording, drawing and photography, building towards producing a print publication together on the second day.

The workshop forms part of the Isle of Wight Biosphere Festival and focuses on green and blue spaces across the Isle of Wight.

The two days will include a short walk and outdoor drawing and research session, with Daneen Cowling from The Common Space joining to discuss the area’s unique ecology.

Participants will also get to learn about riso printing during the indoor sessions at Boojum & Snark.

University of Southampton research project
The workshop connects to a wider academic study at the University of Southampton, titled ‘Green-blue Connections: Understanding the health, wellbeing and community resilience benefits of green and blue space across the Isle of Wight’.

The project uses creative methods to examine personal connections and access to green and blue spaces within the Isle of Wight Biosphere Reserve.

Who can take part
The workshop is open to anyone aged 18 to 30, and attendance is free, with lunch and snacks provided on both days.

Organisers say no prior experience is necessary – the sessions suit both complete newcomers and those already familiar with creative methods.

Please register to attend online. See the Boojum and Snark website for more information.
