Simon Gardner will present his astronomy talk “We Are Stardust” at Newchurch Pavilion later this month (Friday 27th June 2025).
The Vectis Astronomical Society hosts this hybrid event, allowing audiences to attend either in person or via Zoom.
Simon promises to reveal “one of the most astonishing stories in science” through his exploration of stellar nucleosynthesis.
From Oxford physics to Island stargazing
The speaker brings extensive scientific credentials to his presentation. Simon studied physics at Oxford University, before working as a radar engineer at Plessey Radar and its successor companies.
The Islander attended school in Cowes before pursuing his academic career off the Island.
He returned to the Island in 1999 to resume his engineering work.

Retirement fuels astronomical passion
Since retiring, Simon has dedicated time to studying astrophysics purely for enjoyment.
He currently serves as Editor of New Zenith and acting Programme Organiser for the Vectis Astronomical Society.
His diverse interests span music, science, history and linguistics.
Simon describes himself as someone who has “always been interested in too many things”.
The science behind stardust
The talk will examine the processes that create all elements from which everything forms.
Simon plans to span the entire history of the Universe in his presentation. He promises to include stories about the scientists who uncovered these cosmic mysteries.
The speaker hints that his talk will feature “flower power and a headless Frenchman, with a fair sprinkling of Nobel prizes”.
Interactive evening with musical elements
Simon warns that his presentation “may contain music and humour”. The event will run for approximately 45-60 minutes with a question and answer session afterwards.
The society welcomes non-members to attend these monthly talks.

Organisers suggest a £2.50 donation for non-members attending the event.
