Letter: Immigration on the Island – Are social media users missing the mark?

This from Paul Carter, Niton. Ed

On Facebook a couple of days ago there was an item from the Daily Star about how a long-loved holiday destination was in decline.

Always an admirer of the impeccable journalism we can find in the Star, I had a look; I thought it might be about Southport. But it was about the Island.

Illustrated with an admittedly dismal scene in Newport, it mentioned out-of-date hotels, deprivation, unemployment and all the rest. Debatable, but what was interesting were the FB viewers’ comments.

Immigration a problem?
In particular the number of people who attributed this decline to IMMIGRATION. Yes, immigration.

I have been coming to the Island for forty years, and had a home there for ten years. I don’t recall meeting a single immigrant, except one Polish person who is certainly earning her keep and adding value.

Have I missed something?
