A wave of creativity is set to reach the Isle of Wight as Light UP Youth Theatre, a respected Hampshire-based performing arts charity, expands its reach across the Solent.
This September, the organisation will launch its first Isle of Wight franchise, offering weekly youth theatre classes in Ryde.
Summer workshops to spark imagination
Before the official launch in the autumn, local children and teenagers can take part in two themed drama workshops during the August holidays.
Led by Donna Steele — a seasoned theatre educator and Island resident — these sessions aim to inspire 7–16 year olds through storytelling, creative movement, and performance.

Donna says,
“These workshops are more than just fun days out — they’re a chance for children and teens to find their voice, express themselves and work together creatively.
“I can’t wait to welcome young performers from across the Island and give them a platform to shine.”
Drama days in Ryde this August
The first workshop, “Marvellous Mischief: A Dahl-ightful Drama Day”, takes place on Tuesday 19th August at Department in Ryde.
Designed for ages 7–11, the session runs from 10am to 4pm and invites children to mix up characters from Roald Dahl’s stories, culminating in a lively show-back for families at 3.30pm.
On Tuesday 26th August, teens aged 12–16 can explore the Island’s darker tales in “Isle of Fright: Drama from the Dark Side of the Island”, also at The Department from 10am to 4pm, again culminating in a performance showcase for families at 3.30pm.
This spine-tingling workshop uses ghost stories and local legends as inspiration, blending movement and theatre into a one-day performance experience.
Bringing Light UP to the Island
Light UP was founded in 2014 to offer accessible, high-quality drama opportunities to young people across Hampshire.
Its mission is to build confidence, creativity, and communication skills through inclusive performing arts education.
The Isle of Wight branch will begin weekly classes in September, with further plans to build links with community groups and schools.
How to get involved
Bookings for the August workshops are now open, with both sessions welcoming children of all experience levels.
