As residents of the Island are very aware, council bosses have sacked a lot of people that used to work at the public authority.

Empty WallettThe cost of shedding these people has been revealed in the council’s draft statement of accounts – the same document that showed the increase in salaries of top council officers.

2010-11 £3.36m + £1.3m in 2009-10
Under a heading of Termination Benefit (page 102), the document shows that laying the council workers off, just in the year 2010-11, has been charged at £3.364 million. This is significant increase from the 2009-11 costs of £1.309 million.

In their words …

The £3.364 million includes costs incurred in 2010-11, together with accruals where staff had received a termination letter from the Council on or before 31 March 2011, and a provision for those staff identified as ‘at risk’ and for whom a reasonable estimate of likely costs could be made.
