Quay Arts are proud to announce that the successful applicants for the Start-Up Studio opportunities based at Jubilee Stores are two local creatives, Laura Hathaway and Howard Hardiman.

The Start-Up Studio aims to support them by providing them with free shared workspace and mentoring in the early stages of their creative career for one year starting from 2 April 2013.

Textile artist and printmaker Laura Hathaway
Laura Hathaway based in Gurnard is a textile artist and printmaker and graduated in Textile Design from University College Falmouth in 2011 specialising in hand embroidery, beading and fabric manipulation. It is print-making that Laura now hopes to develop during her year at Jubilee Stores.

Laura says “Having recently returned from three months backpacking around the coast of Australia, I am energised, inspired and thrilled to be offered such a fantastic opportunity and to be surrounded by other creatives and I hope that this year will be one of learning and progression.”

Illustrator and painter Howard Hardiman
Howard Hardiman is an illustrator and painter from Freshwater. After a few pieces of published writing and photographic exhibitions, Howard found himself doodling on post-it notes which he then put online. One recurring character was a badger living in his flat and moping around in South London.

Eventually, he collected these into a book, which Forbidden Planet’s bloggers picked up on and singled out as one of the best new books of the year. The interest in the figure and animals has continued, and he is now currently working on a series based on shamanism and mythological hybrid characters which he hopes to continue during the residency.

On the impact of the residency, Howard says “The residency is an incredible opportunity. I’m really looking forward to being able to work on larger pieces than wouldn’t be practical at home and also to be able to work as a part of a community of creatives rather than in isolation at home. It’s a huge confidence boost to have the support of Quay Arts and I am really looking forward to exploring options and opportunities with their mentors. I can’t wait to get stuck in!”
