New Police and Crime Commissioner makes her first visit to the Isle of Wight

Donna Jones, the new Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), is on the Isle of Wight today (Friday) to meet with a number of partners.

The purpose of the visit is to “gain an in-depth understanding of the unique policing challenges and community concerns on the Island”.

Include IW in constabulary name
She’ll also be putting the feelers out about including Isle of Wight in the official name for Hampshire Constabulary.

Plans to include the Isle of Wight in the official constabulary name was dropped by former PCC Michael Lane – after it had been tabled by his predecessor, Simon Hayes.

Meeting partners
The new PCC will be meeting:

  • The Leader of the Council Councillor Lora Peacey-Wilcox, CEO John Metcalfe, Community Safety Operations Manager Andrew Wheeler and Bob Seely MP
  • Hampshire Constabulary District Commander Superintendent Sarah Jackson, also including a tour of Newport Police Station and custody and a meeting with the policing team
  • You Trust, a local charity recently awarded funding by the Commissioner to support victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence
  • Young people at the Isle of Wight Violence Reduction Unit

The Commissioner will also be launching her consultation with partners, the police and the public to seek their views on including the Isle of Wight into the name of Hampshire Constabulary in the future.
