Newport Football Club building resilient squad for upcoming Wessex League season

Newport Football Club have confirmed their intent to compete in the Wessex League for the upcoming 2023/24 season.

This announcement comes amidst rumours of the 130-year-old club dropping into the Island League, following a significant number of players leaving at the end of the recent season.

Building a new squad
The club, however, is taking a proactive stance to address this setback.

They are in the process of building a new squad for the forthcoming campaign, and have also announced the addition of a reserve team.

Interestingly, this reserve team will be participating in the Island League.

Brougham: Good things come from adversity
The club’s manager, Steve Brougham, provided an optimistic outlook on the situation.

Brougham said,

“Yes, we have lost players, but good things come from adversity.”

He acknowledged the existence of a core group of experienced players who have committed to playing for the club next season.

In addition to this seasoned core, the manager confirmed that they have bring in a few younger players for the squad.

Brougham: Not going to see this wonderful club decline on our watch
Brougham , along with Andy North and Gary Streeter, will be at the helm of the first team, whilst Stuart Shepherd will manage the Island League side.

The manager assured supporters,

“We are all football people and we were not going to see this wonderful club decline on our watch.”

Focused on a strong 23/24 season
Evidently, the club’s spirit remains unyielding, as Brougham expressed eagerness about the team’s move to a new home ground in the 2024/25 season.

Until then, they are setting their sights on a strong 23/24 season.

SCL: New ground ready for use for the 24/25 season
In the meantime, St George’s Park owners, South Coast Leisure, made a statement regarding the club’s forthcoming move.

A spokesperson said,

“We continue to make progress with the new football ground and it remains our intention to have this state-of-the art new facility completed and ready for use for the 24/25 season.”

Clearly, the upcoming seasons hold significant promise and potential for the rejuvenated Newport Football Club.
