Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat Crew with Bob White portrait on top

50th anniversary of Dave Howlett’s amazing adventure marked again by Islander’s journey and fundraiser

50 years ago, on 5th June, Dave Howlett left Shanklin on a solo sponsored row for the RNLI, aiming for Guernsey.

The weather turned and, the next day, he abandoned “Tenacity” off Alderney.

Next week, Bob White will be doing the same journey in honour of Dave to raise money for Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat. However Bob won’t be doing it in a rowing boat, but using public transport.

He says,

“At 9am on Monday, at the (still toilet-less) Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat Station, a public transport journey to Alderney in honour of 1972 and 1973 cross-Channel rower Dave Howlett will commence, its culmination being at Alderney RNLI the following morning.”

£600 raised last year
Bob explains that the first 50th anniversary celebration which took place last year, raised over £600, split equally between S&SILB and Guernsey RNLI.

He adds,

“There will also be ‘carried’ philatelic covers for those who collect – in 1973 Dave’s were rescued when high seas forced abandonment off Alderney.”
