There was a Full house (of Lords) today for the discussion on the Bill that OneWight supporters would be interested in.
Lord Falconer aimed to persuade the House of Lords that the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Bill should be sent for Examination, which would take 7-10 days. If successful this could well disrupt the Bill becoming law – hence the Island remaining as it is, a single constituency.
In a debate of around one hour many of the Lords and Ladies spoke in support and against Lord Falconer’s Hybridity suggestions.
Voting
In the House of Lords, they don’t indicate a Yes or No to a vote, but Content or Not Content. Neither do they vote in the chamber, but do it outside.
The vote was very close with 210 votes going for Content and 224 for Not Content – meaning that Lord Falconer’s suggested being rejected.
Next up is a discussion about second reading of the Bill, which is expected to take many hours, but could end up in the Bill being rejected in the Lords, sending it back to the Commons.
