Parking permits: Residents can now pay £50 per month

The Conservative-led Isle of Wight council which was voted into power in 2005 with a promise to provide £50 annual parking permits, has just announced that residents can now pay monthly for their annual parking permit.

The monthly cost? £50.

Readers will remember that the parking permit was initially issued at £50 per annum, this was then increased to £75 per annum and finally in 2010 jumped to £500 per annum.

See below for full details from the council.

EASY WAY TO PAY FOR PARKING PERMITS

The Isle of Wight Council is introducing direct debit payments as a way to help spread the cost for motorists who buy an annual parking permit.

The 12-month permits gives drivers unlimited parking in any council-run long stay car park across the Island (excluding Dinosaur Isle and Browns Golf Course).

Anyone purchasing the permits can now pay a monthly direct debit fee of £50, which works out to around £1.60 a day which is significantly cheaper than buying a pay and display ticket. Currently, it costs £6.60 to park in a long-stay car park for more than six hours a day.

Motorists also have the option of paying £500 up front for the annual permit. There are also options to buy three month and six month permits although direct debit payments are not available on these.

Anyone wishing to buy a permit should contact parking services on (01983) 823714 or visit a council help centre or log on to www.iwight.com for more information.
