St Helens church was gleaming on Saturday. Not just due to the new renovations which were proudly presented by the parishioners, but because of the skillful musicianship of Chris Hirst and Polly Green.
The pair form part of a musical group, Quatrapuntal, and graced the audience with a selection of their own music and some classics.
The pair used recorded tracks to fill in for the two absent members of the group. Chris Hirst took strings (demonstrating proficiency in a range of instruments), while Polly Green was the vocalist.
Audience taken through different stylistic moods with ease
Undoubtedly a virtuoso, Chris played with a natural grace and charisma that allowed plenty of space for Polly’s voice to flourish. And indeed, with a naturally light and versatile voice, Polly took the audience through several different stylistic moods with ease.
The pair were naturally communicative with the audience and told several stories of the making of some of their music, including the music videos, which can be found on Youtube.
Particularly worth noting, was their rendition of “You Raise Me Up,” a particular favourite of many in the audience, which was energetic and soulful.
About the group
Quatrapuntal admittedly attend few concerts, which made Saturday’s performance all the more special.
However, their own pieces can be found on Youtube and Facebook.
It’s definitely worth a little look if you’re interested in unconventional instruments and delicate, agile melodies.
