UK Health Agency issues ‘Yellow’ Cold Health Alert for vulnerable groups

A ‘Yellow’ Cold Health alert has been issued by the UK health Security Agency in partnership with the Met Office. It is valid until Tuesday 5th December 2023.

The General Overview is that significant impacts are possible across the health and social care sector due to forecast weather conditions.

Affecting several groups
The impacts of the colder weather are likely to affect those in the 65+ age group, those with certain underlying health conditions, but also younger age groups.

There could be an increased demand for remote health care services, as well as an impact on ability of services delivered due to effects on workforce.

Maintain 18°c
Maintaining indoor temperatures at the recommended 18°c may become challenging for some, leading to increased risk of vulnerable people.

Check the Met Office for any weather warnings in your area by visiting their website.

Tips to stay warm
See the Government website for tips on how to stay well in colder weather. It includes advice such as:

You should heat your home to a temperature that is comfortable for you. Low indoor temperatures can have a serious impact on your health, especially if you have medical conditions or are older.

Simple changes can help to keep you and your home warm. These include:

  • try to heat rooms you spend a lot of time in, such as the living room or bedroom, to at least 18°C
  • try to reduce draughts; you can fit draft excluders around doors cheaply
  • keep your bedroom windows closed at night
  • wear several layers of thinner clothing; this could keep you warmer than one thicker layer

See the Government website for more information.
