Packed Fracking Talk Cafe Scientifique Isle of Wight Jan 2014

If you want to understand Fracking, this is a good place to start

The January meeting of the Isle of Wight branch of the Cafe Scientifique saw record numbers attending, with over 100 people coming to the talk.

They’d all come to hear Professor Chris Rhodes talk about Fracking. A very measured and balanced talk, Chris first gave a background on the current state of the energy market, outlining current and potential sources.

Digging into what’s involved
After laying the groundwork, Chris went into the details of fracking – what’s involved; how is it done in the US; how population densities in US and Europe differ – finishing with what can be done to balance growing energy demands (Did you know the world uses around 1,000 barrels of oil per second!) and an expanding population.

More talks on the way
If you missed the talk, or would like to listen to it again, the Island’s Cafe Sci has audio recordings of (most of) Chris’ talk, as well as the lively Q&A session after. His slides are also available to be viewed.

If you’re interested in attending the very informative Cafe Scientifique talks, more details are on the Cafe Sci Website.
