West Acre Park planning application stalled due to concerns over impact on Solent waders and migrating birds

The West Acre Park planning application was due to go back to Isle of Wight council’s Planning Committee on 20th December 2022.

However, this Committee meeting has now been cancelled.

Issues raised by Natural England
As previously reported by News OnTheWight, Natural England have raised issues in relation to the new homes being built on the feeding grounds of Solent waders and migrating birds.

Cllr Michael Lilley, who has been heavily involved with the campaign to save Westridge Farm, says that planning officers will require the Committee to agree to amendments on the application to include mitigation conditions.

Planning consent still not issued
Cllr Lilley tells News OnTheWight that the developer, Captiva Homes, who plan to build 473 homes on the site, is still in talks with Natural England.

The results of this is that because planning consent still cannot be issued, the residents’ lawyers cannot proceed with a Judicial Review to challenge the decision.

Contentious Planning Committee meeting
The planning application was approved at a Planning Committee meeting on 27th July 2021.

The contentious meeting, chaired by Vice-Chairman of the Committee, Cllr Geoff Brodie, had become the subject of legal letters to the council.

Campaigners to save Westridge Farm launched a Crowdjustice campaign to fund a Judicial Review of the decision made.

Homes for Islanders
Captiva Homes say 80 per cent of the property reservations at West Acre Park have come from Islanders and 45 per cent from Ryde itself
