It’s widely reported today that the recent wet weather has had an impact on the start of the asparagus season, delaying it by as much as ten days.
Foodies across the nation will know that come 1st May each year, British grown asparagus is a sought after commodity.
The season runs until the end of June, during which time we can enjoy the delicious taste of asparagus, be it in pasta, risotto or simply pan-fried with garlic butter and a squeeze of fresh lemon.
We spoke to Ben Brown from Farmer Jack’s Farm Shop earlier today to see whether his crop has been affected by the inclement weather.
5% of yield but farm shop gets priority
Yes was the straight answer, with crop yield just 5% compared to this time last year.
However they do have some asparagus in the farm shop in Arreton – which gets priority over other places they supply – and Ben also added that the cold weather can give the asparagus a stronger tastier flavour – so it’s not all bad!
If you’re wondering what Ben’s favourite asparagus dish is, “there’s nothing like steamed asparagus dipped into a fresh boiled egg with hollandaise sauce and a dash of vinegar.”
