Polling station :

Guide to the 2014 Euro election candidates for the South East

If you are registered on the Electoral Roll, you should have received your Poll Card to vote at the European election this Thursday (22nd May).

Here at OnTheWight we’ve received canvassing literature from just four parties, UKIP, Labour, Liberal Democrats and Conservatives.

There is just one candidate from the Isle of Wight standing in the European Elections, Andy Matthews, from the Socialist Party of Great Britain.

How proportional representation works
There are ten seats up for grabs and the voting works on proportional representation.

The order of who would be the first in a party to take a seat is listed in the table below.

This helpful video below explains how the d’Hondt system of proportional representation works. Initially it sounds complex, but is pretty easy to follow once they start putting some numbers against it.

The Candidates
All 118 candidates are listed in the table below. Use the slider on the right to see he entire list.

Voting takes place between 7am and 10pm and the results will be revealed following the Count which takes place on Sunday 25th May.

If you can’t find your Poll Card, don’t worry, you can still vote. Just turn up and take something proving your identity.

Every time I say I won’t vote in these elections, and every blessed time I do … but my enthusiasm for this unwieldy and remote Parliament is about as great as it is for having a tooth removed… (A joy to which I have to look forward.) I have seen one or two of these candidates on the island – just pre-election. I’ve never yet seen the… Read more »

“None of the Above” will still not be a choice on the ballot paper.

I think it’s fairly obvious the Greens are going to walk this. Not only do they have Jason Kitcat (love his product) they have Superman’s dad, Jonathan Kent, on their side!

More importantly, the Greens are our best hope after decades of others making things worse for us. ‘Business as usual’ with our limited resources will not provide the vital jobs, food, & energy we want. It makes sense to elect people who best understand our increasingly urgent problems & the possible responses. We have the opportunity to do more than just complain or protest vote; proportional representation… Read more »

Is lying endemic in election propaganda or is it written by PR people still wet behind the ears??

Today’s Conservative leaflet claims ” REAL CHANGE WE HAVE DELIVERED: The first-ever EU Budget cut saving British taxpayers £8.15 billion”

Note “first ever”!

Presumably they are ignoring the EU budget rebate negotiated by the Tory patron saint- St. Margaret of Grantham of less that holy memory in 1984?

Interesting that UKIP are leading in the polls and even tonight I saw a party political broadcast by that tory leader Mr.? not slagging off Labour, Libs etc. but UKIP (is he worried)? More interesting though, if you look at France who do you think is leading in the polls? The National Front!!!

Do not put too much faith on amateur polls counting self-selected online voters such as the CP one. They are too easily manipulated. However, you are right the Tories are running scared of UKIP in the EU MEP elections. A good indicator is the number of column inches each day in the “Daily Wail” publicising damaging comments and attitudes adopted by UKIP members that Tory PR companies… Read more »

Tomorrow will be a great day for UKIP and the result will show the European Commission will show the true feeling of ordinary folk in Great Britain.

I fear you may be right about UKIP getting a lot of votes, especially from Island residents. With poor education standards due to failures in the Island schools system and a higher proportion of the elderly UKIP has a large group of vulnerable people to prey on. Voting UKIP in the MEP elections is worse than not voting at all. The current UKIP MEPs don’t bother to… Read more »

Make sure you really scroll through to the bottom of the form tomorrow – take your time. It’s in alphabetical order of the parties so there’s a group pretending to be UKIP at the top just to confuse the voters and try to split the UKIP vote – all highly legal evidently. If you want to vote UKIP they are next to bottom on the long form.… Read more »

Ha ha Geoff Clynch and his ma, standing for Britain First now instead of BNP as they were on the Island.
