13 miles in stilettos for Island man as he raises more than £6,500 for domestic abuse hub

Three cheers for Peter May from Fort View Tyre Shop, who on Sunday walked a whopping 13.2 miles in a pair of stiletto boots.

This wasn’t ordinary Sunday attire for Peter, it was all part of a challenge to raise funds and awareness for Wight DASH, the domestic abuse hub for women and men on the Isle of Wight.

“A cause close to my heart”
Peter explained that before he met his wife, she had suffered years of domestic abuse, so supporting Wight DASH is something that is close to his heart.

Months of training
As for the challenge itself, to walk 12 miles in high heels, as Peter soon learned, is no easy feat.

His wife started training him at the end of last year and he’s had to work really hard since then, spending many hours in high heels.

Finding boots that fitted was easy, as Peter is a size 9, and he had almost 20 pairs of different boots donated, “but some I couldn’t possibly walk in”, he joked.

Fellow walkers
Peter was joined on the walk by John Jenkins, who was sporting his New Rock boots and Kelly Waddams from Wight DASH, with her amazing Angel wings made from flip flops.

At over nine and a half miles in, Peter explained to those watching his social media that everything was hurting. His thighs, knees, balls of his feet etc, but he was determined to continue, and continue he did, adding an extra mile onto the total distance walked.

Having started at Fakenham Farm in the morning, Peter, John and Kelly completed their walk at Shoreside Cafe, East Cowes in the late afternoon.

Lots of support
As with challenges of this kind, there are always many people behind the scenes, helping along the way.

Peter’s business is based up at Fakenham Farm, where businesses such as The Coastal Gardener, Oddnobs Emporium, Cece Studio and Kevars Cafe in the Country, as well as our mobile chippy, The Jolly Fryer, have really helped out.

Peter adds,

“A massive thank you goes to Jane and Eric Gidden at The Shoreside cafe on East Cowes esplanade that have allowed me to use their site as a fundraising hub, I’m so grateful.

“And to my wife who has helped every step in heels of the way.”

More than £6,500 raised
At time of publishing, Peter’s To Be In Her Shoes Charity Walk had raised £6,550 for Wight DASH.
