Afton Marsh Recycling Centre to re-open – With number plate recognition

Following its closure back at the beginning of March, West Wighters will be pleased to hear that Afton Marsh Recycling Centre is opening again in just over a week.

Afton Marsh Recycling Centre is to re-open as normal on Saturday 26 March, following refurbishment works.

The facility, which is located near Freshwater, will be open on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. The site has undergone refurbishment to improve the surface for vehicles, new lines painted, upgraded lighting and a new automatic number plate recognition (NPR) camera installed.

Why number plate recognition?
The use of NPR cameras seemed strange to us so we asked the council why.

A spokesperson for Isle of Wight council replied,

“The automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) is used for a number of purposes including tracking footfall to the site and assisting the council to identify businesses that may be using the site to illegally dispose of commercial waste.

“Cameras are standard at household waste and recycling centres on the Mainland.”

Lynnbottom Recycling Centre remains open as normal.
