Flash flooding on Cowes High Street

Flash flooding strikes Isle of Wight following heavy rain on Thursday night

A sudden burst of heavy rain led to many incidents of flash flooding on the Isle of Wight last night (Thursday).

The heavy rain resulted in more than 50 calls to Island Roads, including reports of standing water, debris in the road and manhole and drain covers being lifted off due to the volume of water in the drainage system.

Our thanks to Sham Sheraz, who was on his way to pick up a take-away from Spice Central in Cowes during the heavy rain, for sharing his shots.

Sham, who has a passion for photography, told OnTheWight that the rainwater was gushing down the hills and ending up on the High Street.

He said he was not able to get to the take-away, and the staff from Spice Central were not able to get out.

Island Roads say the sandbag stores in East Cowes, Cowes and Ryde had all been opened the previous day, given the forecast of heavy rain.

Ongoing clearance
The flash flooding led to large amount of debris covering the highway and much of this included stones washed onto the network from unmade roads and gravel paths.

The clearance work, which is ongoing, has mostly been in Cowes and East Cowes.
