Flood alert issued for the Eastern Yar and tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge (updated)

The Environment Agency have issued a Flood Alert for the Isle of Wight.

They say flooding is possible for the Eastern Yar and tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge.

The warning reads:

The water level in the Eastern Yar is high and rising.  In the last 12 hours, 36 mm of rain was recorded at Knighton.

From 10:00 today (14/9/22), water levels will become noticeably high at Alverstone, rising near to the top of the river bank.

Some minor out of bank flooding may also occur in fields at Langbridge. We do not expect access issues to Horringford or impacts at Sandown. Property flooding is not expected.

Further rain is expected this morning and water levels will rise throughout this time, being generally much higher than normal. Rain is expected to clear the area this afternoon.

At Alverstone, the river won’t peak until at least 13:00 this afternoon, by which time levels will be very high, right to the top of the river bank, near the main road bridge.

Drier weather this afternoon and tomorrow (15/9/22) will give water levels a chance to recover.  We continue to monitor the forecast and respond to any reported blockages.

Please ensure that pumps used to protect gardens and property can operate.
