From the Olympic Games to Cowes

Thanks to Alan and Suzanne Whitewood for this roundup of sailing news. Ed

This year’s Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week has received a boost with the announcement that Skandia Team GBR’s top sailors will be present in Cowes just one week after competing for Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games. Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week immediately follows the Olympic Games and will provide a fantastic opportunity to celebrate what has historically been one of Great Britain’s most successful Olympic sports.

Skandia Team GBR’s sailors are due to attend the regatta on Friday 17th August. Organisers are working with the RYA, Aberdeen Asset Management and Volvo, Skandia Team GBR sponsor and Official Car Supplier to the event, to create a programme for the sailors that enables competitors and spectators at the event to celebrate their efforts in this summer’s Games.

There will be a red, white and blue theme around Cowes during regatta week, (11-18 August) and a chance to watch the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games live on the big screens throughout Cowes on Sunday 12 August which will coincide with a special Family Day.

Your chance to Sail for Gold
Brading Haven Yacht Club (BHYC) based in St Helens is just one of dozens of clubs in the south which is taking to the water to showcase sailing to the nation and show their support for our Olympic sailors prior to the London 2012 Games.

BHYC has risen to the challenge with a series of Sail for Gold ‘Have a Go Sessions’. Anyone who is new to boating and would like to have a taste of what being on the water is like is invited to register, at a cost of only £5. Contact BHYC for details.

Ludo Gets to the Scottish Highlands and beyond
You will remember we reported at the beginning of May on 21 year old Ludo Bennett-Jones undertaking a round Britain trip in his very small yacht. In our first report he had set sail from Cowes and had reached North Devon.

Most days there has been progress despite the unseasonable weather and after heading for Wales, the Isle of Man and Northern Ireland were stop off points before heading for Scotland.

Over the last few days he has sailed down the East coast of Scotland on his 2,500 N mile trip and is heading for North Sunderland. He now plans to get back to Cowes on 7th July.
