Congratulations are in order for Islander, Sam Jefferies, who last night was presented with the Sheila Mekechnie Foundation People’s Choice Campaigner Award.

The awards ceremony took place in the House of Lords following a public vote. Sam, a volunteer who himself has a learning disability, was nominated for the award and up against four others from around the country.

Active campaigner
Sam was recognised for the work he has done to help drive the campaign to tackle the root causes of injustice forward.

He supported the campaign by talking directly to MPs and Lords; giving evidence as part of a Review-led by three members of the House of Lords, giving a speech at the launch of this Review, travelling from the Isle of Wight to attend a mass lobby of MPs in Parliament, sharing his personal story online and in the national media showing how he could be affected by the changes, and using his own Twitter account to support the campaign and spread the message to his 1,000+ followers.

Hurrah!
This award is well-deserved recognition for Sam’s tireless campaigning.

Keep up the good work!
