Six public car parks will be closed on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th June by Isle of Wight council ‘should they be required to hold traffic’ for the IW Festival.
IWC say,
“The situation will be closely monitored though and it is hoped the car parks will be reopened during the course of each day.”
Strangely, especially as the council say they are trying to do everything they can to keep people informed, they have not contacted the press to let them know about this.
The initial reaction from the public has not been good.
Simon Kennett asked, “Will all other car parks be free to compensate residents inconvenience?”
Beccy Moss: Ridiculous … Car Parks can not be used just in case , What about the people that want to go to the beach or take their kids out in Ryde … Or the people who use coppins bridge car park because they want to go to the cinema …. s*d everybody else as long as the festival goes ok !!
Gill Windram: Would be interested to know the route from the ferries to the festival site via Yaverland
Bryony Green So how is shutting 2 car parks in Sandown helpful – hope no-one wants to go to the beach or anywhere else in Sandown for that matter!!! Also does the Fort Street closure apply to the coach park??
Here’s the detail from the council:-
As part of our traffic management contingency plans, some Isle of Wight Council car parks will closed on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th June. A list is below.
This is to provide locations should they be required to hold traffic in case of any emergencies or incidents on the highway network. The situation will be closely monitored though and it is hoped the car parks will be reopened during the course of each day. You should follow this page, iwight.com and local media for updates.
These car parks that will be closed are:
RYDE: Appley Car Park and Ryde Canoe Lake
SANDOWN: Fort St Car Park and Yaverland Car Park
NEWPORT: Coppins Bridge Car Park.
YARMOUTH*: River Road Car Park will be partially closed, with over 100 spaces still available to the public. On the Thursday and Friday, long stay permits will be valid in all council long and short stay car parks in Newport only. This does not apply to on-street parking.
