New Speaker, John Bercow, Was Political Hero To David Pugh

David Pugh Admired New Speaker, John BercowWay back in 2001, The Leader of the IW Council, David Pugh, was heading up operations at the Conservative Future – funkin’ those cats up …. or something like that.

He was interviewed by the Guardian about the process of bringing the Young Conservatives together with the Conservative Future.

During the article it came to light that they wanted to shift away from the posh-twit image of the YCs to something more inclusive. (It contained fab, out of context quotes like, “We don’t have YC balls anymore”).

Political heroes
David Pugh and fellow CF-er, Andy Stephenson, where asked for their political heroes – Winston Churchill and Keith Joseph came the reply.

Of current interest is their choice of hero from the then-current shadow cabinet – John Bercow, now Leader of the House.

The journo concluded that “While their heroes may be on the right, their eyes are very much on Labour’s ground.”

Bercow: A controversial figure
Bercow was a controversial figure (Wikipedia tells us) who later defied a three-line Conservative whip, voting with Labour on a Bill to allow unmarried gay and heterosexual couples to adopt children. A defiant move that then followed by resigning from the front bench.

Five years later, there were rumours that John Bercow was going to defect to the Labour party.
