It’s fantastic to see a great piece of promotion for Isle of Wight food producer, Wild Island, in yesterday’s Guardian. You may have seen their range of dressings, dips, marinades and glazes in many of the Island’s farm shops.
Titled ‘Salad dressings for success’ and found in the Cook supplement of Saturday’s Guardian, the article features an interview with Nuala Grandcourt, founder and brainchild of the Wild Island brand of products.
Inspired by slow food ethos
Nuala explains to Eve O’Sullivan where her passion for producing goods from local ingredients came from.
“The slow food ethos really inspired me when it came to setting up Wild Island; the vast majority of my ingredients come from the Isle of Wight. When you use good-quality, local ingredients, you take the time to think about the best ways of using them, how they might work well together and making sure that you do them justice.”
Keeping it in the family
The business has been built slowly over the last three years and Nuala now supplies 16 shops on the Island and 35 on the mainland. She has second to none quality control, as she bottles all the products herself with the help of her daughters, a whopping 350-400 bottles a week.
Nuala explains,
“My husband Gerard helps me with the logistics and figures so I can focus on the recipes, and Izzy and Sophie, my daughters, help me with the bottling.”
If you haven’t tried any of the Wild Island products, we can thoroughly recommend the Raspberry Dressing, it’s absolutely delicious. Well done Nuala and family!
