Together for Children conference unites Isle of Wight organisations to support families

More than 110 people from across the Isle of Wight came together this week for the Together for Children: Collaboration and Partnership Conference.

The event focused on how local organisations can work more closely to support children and families on the Island.

Celebrating community work
The Isle of Wight is home to a wide range of community and voluntary groups providing vital services — from parenting support and youth clubs to food banks and inclusive activities for children with disabilities.

The conference gave attendees a chance to celebrate this work and explore ways to strengthen collaboration.

Welcome and keynote
Maria Thacker from The Bay Youth Project opened the day, alongside former High Sheriff Graham Biss.

Mr Biss worked closely with community organisations during his time in office and has long championed the benefits of collaboration. His involvement helped bring the event to life, working with the Isle of Wight Council’s Family and Community Services team.

Whittaker: By working together, we can build on our strengths
Ashley Whittaker, who leads children’s services at the council, delivered the keynote address. He said,

“This conference was a fantastic opportunity to bring together the people and organisations who are making a real difference in our communities.

“By working together, we can build on our strengths and ensure that every child and family on the Island has the support they need to thrive.”

Workshops and discussion
Attendees took part in group sessions throughout the day. The first focused on the different needs of children, from infancy to young adulthood.

The second covered key themes such as mental health, education, safety and helping young people raise their aspirations.

Each session was led by experienced staff from a range of local organisations, with time set aside for open discussion and idea sharing. Information stands also gave delegates the chance to find out more about local services.

Looking ahead
The conference closed with a summary of ideas from the day and thoughts on what could happen next.

Many attendees said they found the event both useful and inspiring.
