The results of the 2012 Isle of Wight Youth Council and Isle of Wight Member of the UK Youth Parliament have been revealed.

A total of almost 2,000 votes were cast as young people chose who they wanted to see represent them across the Island and in the UK Youth Parliament.

This year, a total of six wards were being contested instead of the usual four, with specific areas.

Successful candidates
In the new Cowes and East Cowes area, Oskar Mason, Natalia Kerr, Thomas Turtle and Zara Fuller were successful.

For the Ryde area, Kieren Thompson, Alec Webb, James Lush and Bronte Debenham won the public voting.

In Newport, Freddie Green, Charlie Sherwood and Alister Webb were successful, while Chloe Nixon, Tessa Kewell, Ashton Helyer and Elspeth Venn were voted in the Sandown ward.

In Ventnor, William Hall was elected, and finally in the West Wight, Atalanta Hersey and Christopher Case were voted for by their fellow peers.

General members
Six other candidates who did not win individual seats but polled the highest votes following election of candidates to specific areas have been elected as general members. These are Luke Belcher, Jordan Westwood, Julia Banachowska, Arife Sen-White, Lawrie Mason and Aaron Wilkins.

The Member of the UK Youth Parliament was Robert Selby, with Willoughby Matthews elected as Deputy Member of the UK Youth Parliament.

Isle of Wight Council Leader David Pugh said “I send my congratulations to the new members of the youth council.

“The Isle of Wight Council works closely with the Youth Council on a range of schemes and important matters, and I look forward to continuing this partnership throughout 2013.”

The new members will meet for the first time at a meeting of the youth council on Thursday 20 December.
