Alum Bay beach steps reopen: Timely repairs ensure Bank Holiday access

The steps to the beach at Alum Bay have reopened following extensive repairs and in some parts replacement.

The steps and landings in Alum Bay Chine are subject to the constant threat of damage from the forces of nature which often occurs during the winter months. Due to adverse weather conditions and coastal erosion the stairs had to close for safety reasons.

Bacon: Everyone is delighted access to the beach has been restored
Cllr Jonathan Bacon, Cabinet member for climate change and the environment, said,

“Everyone is delighted that access to the beach has been restored. 

“I would like to thank the contractor, Faithful Quality Timber, and our rights of way team who have worked hard over the past few weeks to complete the necessary repairs in time for the bank holiday weekend.”

Work undertaken
The works included replacement and realignment of flights of steps, landings, and walkway. Remaining stairs had to be straightened and strengthened.

The stairs provide safe and free access to the popular beach which is enjoyed by many visitors and is base of operation for pleasure cruises.
