New Chairperson for committee that scrutinises Isle of Wight council’s policymaking, budget and performance

At last night’s full council meeting, the new chairperson of the Corporate Scrutiny Committee was voted in.

The previous chairperson, Steve Hastings (Con), had recently announced his decision to step back from the role of leader, and chair of the committee, due to health reasons.

The Isle of Wight Conservatives had hopes of Cllr Joe Robertson – the new leader of the group – stepping into Cllr Hasting’s shoes on the Committee, but at last night’s meeting another candidate for the role was nominated.

Another nomination
Cllr Karl Love (Alliance) nominated Cllr Richard Quigley (Lab) for the role. He said he believed that Quigley would definitely hold us all to account.

Cllr Quigley was appointed with 19 votes in favour, whilst Cllr Robertson attracted 14 votes.

Quigley: One of the places we can abandon our party politics
Following the meeting, Cllr Quigley told News OnTheWight,

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to chair the Corporate Scrutiny Committee.

“The Scrutiny Committee is one of the places in council we can abandon our party politics and work together, not just to scrutinise effectively, but to recommend policy that improves outcomes for Islanders.

“When we work together effectively, we can give the committee some real teeth to make changes, rather than it just being party political broadcasts.

“I thank Cllr Hastings’s for the effort he has put in and look forward to working effectively together.”
