Teenagers learn radio skills at community radio station

Thanks to Ian for this latest news from Vectis Radio. Ed

Online community radio station, Vectis Radiowas set up in 2010. Late last year (2013) we launched our “Four Ps Radio Course” consisting of Presentation, Promotion, Production, and Podcasting.

The course was set up to give teenagers from the ages of 13 and 19 to gain some experience in media/radio and we also want to do our bit with the issues within schools in building up confidence in teenagers, working on their English language skills and more importantly working on their levels of communication.

Christ the King College took up the challenge
The first school to take us up on the Four P’s Radio Course was Christ the King College.

Three young women, Clementine Badgery, Chloe Parker and Ella Rose, all 16 years of age and all in the sixth form, each put together a 15 to 20 minute documentary on the different aspects of The Footprint Trust.

Their efforts go to air this Friday (21st February) at 10am and will be repeated on Sunday between noon and 3pm.

Course Tutor Ian Mac said,

“The three young ladies now have a knowledge of how media works, they have also grown in confidence during the 6 week course and have also hosted a phone-in debate.”

Get involved
The Four Ps Project is open to all schools on the Isle of Wight if you would like to know more email [email protected]

The aim of Vectis Radio is to involve the community as much as possible in the operation of the station by promoting local events, charities and businesses and by giving opportunities to anyone interested to broadcast their own show regardless of age or ability.

The station has been operating for four years and has a strong bond with the community. Children from all over the Island have already undertaken work experience at the station, including pupils from Carisbrooke, St Georges, and Ryde.

Vectis Radio aims to extend its community support and involvement by offering the Four Ps course to all Island schools.
