Heritage Open Days: Time to look back

Starting on Thursday 6th September and continuing on Friday and over the weekend are ‘Heritage Open Days’.

Run nationally these are the days when properties and other venues, which usually are not open to the public or have a ‘charge to view’ system, can be viewed free of charge.

However there are some exceptions and charges or donations apply so do check out your chosen venue beforehand on the Heritage Open Days Website.

Three listed in directory this year
Having visited several different places over the years since this scheme was introduced we have noticed that there does not seem as many venues open this year as before.

According to the online Directory, only three Island attractions are planning to open. All of these will be open for four days from Thursday to Sunday and are: Isle of Wight Steam Railway, Ryde District Heritage Centre and St Thomas Church, Ryde. Please check the Directory for more details. (excluding Alexandra Gardens already mentioned)

Visit Newport Roman Villa for free
In addition to those attractions advertised in the Directory there is the chance to visit Newport’s Roman Villa free of charge.

To celebrate Heritage Open Days, Newport Roman Villa will be open FREE of charge on Saturday 8th September.

Visit and explore the fascinating remains of this Roman farmhouse with something for all the family; activity room, herb garden and museum display.

For more information please email [email protected] or phone the Villa on 529720.
